Diversity & Acceptance
" My lover's got humor
She's the giggle at a funeral
Knows everybody's disapproval
I should've worshiped her sooner
If the heavens ever did speak
She's the last true mouthpiece
Every Sunday's getting more bleak
A fresh poison each week
"We were born sick"
You heard them say it
My church offers no absolutes
She tells me "worship in the bedroom"
The only heaven I'll be sent to
Is when I'm alone with you
I was born sick, but I love it
Command me to be well
Amen, Amen, Amen
Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life " - Hozier
I love this song which became a hit in the very year it was released.
Women not getting their much deserved
freedom and rights.
Young Men getting depressed after years
of feeling unaccomplished.
Homosexuals killing themselves after getting
to know about their orientation.
Millions of people facing mental health
issues owing to the stress created in this world that fails to be flexible even
after calling itself modern.
The noise of the pain that is created by non
acceptance of one's true self is ironically the silent killer of this modern
society.
The cries of those wanting to be accepted are mouth fagged by those who are stuck comfortably in their inertia of a rigid mindset.
Change is apparently the only thing that is constant in this universe, and we as humans have failed miserably in changing ourselves and becoming more accepting towards diversity in almost everything around us. We are still in the process of digesting the magnificence of the possibilities of existence.
Billions of hearts beating on this planet and here we are fighting for acceptance of two or three genders as a whole . Millions of intellectuals walking around, but we can't accept the permutation and combination of sexual orientations. Thousands of successful people around the globe, but the same depression due to failure killing yet another thousands.
In my early years of realization of the diversity that is around us, I asked myself this question very often - " Why can't we just live and let live. The so called moral fiber and ethics playground was designed by ones like us . Why can't we change it ? Infact , why don't we change it ? If not us then who is going to change it ? If not now, then when ? "
After months of struggling with these thoughts, I stumbled on leaders who are actually leading this change and I remember one of them saying, " You have gotta be your own hero and save yourself . And once you have done that become a hero of those around you. That is a life well lived . "
These lines moved me in my early years and I started my journey of exploring more diversity in this world. Diversity of any form amazes me and makes me wonder what this world has to offer .
I call this experience , Leading the change.
And only those who are accepting of this diversity will understand what Sheryl Sandberg means when she says -
" You cannot change what you are not aware of.
And once you are aware, you cannot help but change. "
